Product description

Background

Members of arrestin/beta-arrestin protein family are thought to participate in agonist-mediated desensitization of G-protein-coupled receptors and cause specific dampening of cellular responses to stimuli such as hormones, neurotransmitters, or sensory signals. Arrestin beta 1 is a cytosolic protein and acts as a cofactor in the beta-adrenergic receptor kinase (BARK) mediated desensitization of beta-adrenergic receptors. Besides the central nervous system, it is expressed at high levels in peripheral blood leukocytes, and thus the BARK/beta-arrestin system is believed to play a major role in regulating receptor-mediated immune functions. Alternatively spliced transcripts encoding different isoforms of arrestin beta 1 have been described.

Research target context

ARRB1arrestin beta 1

View target guide

ARRB1 encodes arrestin beta 1, the human beta-arrestin-1 protein. Beta-arrestin-1 is a cytosolic regulator of agonist-activated G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), coordinating receptor desensitization, internalization and subsequent trafficking. Abmium catalogue products linked below support research into ARRB1 expression and GPCR regulatory biology.

Biological function: Beta-arrestin-1 binds activated, phosphorylated GPCRs and limits further coupling to cognate G proteins, contributing to homologous receptor desensitization. It also functions as an endocytic adaptor, recruiting components including AP-2 and clathrin-associated machinery to promote receptor internalization. These activities place ARRB1 at an important control point between receptor activation, trafficking and resensitization.
