NPY encodes neuropeptide Y, a widely expressed neuropeptide in the central nervous system involved in processes including cortical excitability, stress responses, food intake, circadian regulation and cardiovascular function. NPY acts through G-protein-coupled receptors to influence adenylyl cyclase, MAPK signalling, intracellular calcium and potassium-channel activity, and the peptide has also been reported to have antimicrobial activity.
