Aldo-Keto-Reduktase (AKRS) ist in Prokaryoten und Eukaryoten verbreitet, wobei eine Vielzahl von Isoformen existiert. AKRS kann die NADPH-abhängige Carbonylreduktionsreaktion katalysieren, um die entsprechenden Alkohole zu erzeugen. Studien haben gezeigt, dass AKRS mit einer Vielzahl von Krebserkrankungen assoziiert ist. Das Prinzip dieses Kits besteht darin, dass das Substrat durch AKRS katalysiert wird und die chromogene Substanz, die durch die Reaktion des Produkts mit dem chromogenen Reagens entsteht, einen charakteristischen Absorptionspeak bei 450 nm aufweist. Durch die Messung der pro Zeiteinheit produzierten Menge an chromogener Substanz kann die AKRS-Enzymaktivität in der Probe berechnet werden.
