Eine anomale Akkumulation von zellulärem Kupfer in Zellen induziert die Oligomerisierung wichtiger Komponenten des Liponsäure-modifizierten Pyruvat-Dehydrogenase-Komplexes, was den Zitronensäurezyklus beeinflusst, proteotoxischen Stress auslöst und den Zelltod induziert.
Zelluläres Kupfer kann das Substrat katalysieren, um fluoreszierende Substanzen zu produzieren, und je höher die Kupferionenkonzentration ist, desto mehr fluoreszierende Substanzen werden pro Zeiteinheit erzeugt. Die Fluoreszenz kann bei einer Anregungswellenlänge von 395 nm und einer Emissionswellenlänge von 480 nm nachgewiesen werden.
