Das Fettsäuresubstrat kann über den Fettsäuretransporter auf der Zellmembran in die Zelle gelangen, und die Fähigkeit der Zellen, Fettsäuren aufzunehmen, kann durch Fluoreszenzmikroskopie, Fluoreszenzmikroplatten-Reader, Durchflusszytometrie und andere Instrumente zur Messung der Fluoreszenzintensität nachgewiesen werden.
