Chez les mammifères, la famille des mucolipines comprend 3 membres, MCOLN1 (MIM 605248), MCOLN2 et MCOLN3 (MIM 607400), qui présentent une topologie commune à 6 traversées membranaires. Des homologues des mucolipines mammaliennes existent chez la drosophile et C. elegans.
