Ce gène est un membre de la famille des chaînes bêta d'hormones glycoprotéiques et code pour la sous-unité bêta de l'hormone lutéinisante (LH). Les hormones glycoprotéiques sont des hétérodimères constitués d'une sous-unité alpha commune et d'une sous-unité bêta unique qui confère une spécificité biologique. La LH est exprimée dans la glande pituitaire et favorise la spermatogenèse et l'ovulation en stimulant les testicules et les ovaires à synthétiser des stéroïdes. Les gènes des chaînes bêta de la gonadotrophine chorionique et de l'hormone lutéinisante sont contigus sur le chromosome 19q13.3. Les mutations de ce gène sont associées à l'hypogonadisme, caractérisé par l'infertilité et le pseudohermaphrodisme. [fourni par RefSeq, juillet 2008].
