Le petit modificateur 1 lié à l'ubiquitine (SUMO1), également appelé SMT3C ou PIC1, est une protéine qui, chez l'homme, est codée par le gène SUMO1. Ce gène est localisé en 2q33.1. Ce gène code une protéine qui est un membre de la famille des protéines SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier). Il fonctionne de manière similaire à l'ubiquitine en ce sens qu'il est lié à des protéines cibles dans le cadre d'un système de modification post-traductionnelle. Cependant, contrairement à l'ubiquitine qui cible les protéines pour la dégradation, cette protéine est impliquée dans une variété de processus cellulaires, tels que le transport nucléaire, la régulation transcriptionnelle, l'apoptose et la stabilité des protéines. Elle n'est pas active tant que les quatre derniers acides aminés de l'extrémité carboxy-terminale n'ont pas été clivés. Plusieurs pseudogènes ont été signalés pour ce gène.
