Ce gène est localisé sur le chromosome 3q26.1. Il code une enzyme saccharase-isomaltase qui est exprimée dans la bordure en brosse intestinale. La protéine codée est synthétisée sous forme de protéine précurseur qui est clivée par des protéases pancréatiques en deux sous-unités enzymatiques, la saccharase et l'isomaltase. Ces deux sous-unités s'hétérodimérisent pour former le complexe saccharase-isomaltase. Ce complexe est essentiel pour la digestion des glucides alimentaires, y compris l'amidon, le saccharose et l'isomaltose. Les mutations de ce gène sont la cause du déficit congénital en saccharase-isomaltase.
