Ce gène code un facteur de transcription qui induit l'expression des métallothionéines et d'autres gènes impliqués dans l'homéostasie des métaux en réponse aux métaux lourds tels que le cadmium, le zinc, le cuivre et l'argent. La protéine est une protéine de navette nucléocytoplasmique qui s'accumule dans le noyau lors d'une exposition aux métaux lourds et se lie aux promoteurs contenant un élément sensible aux métaux (MRE).
