La sous-unité bêta de la bêta-hexosaminidase (HEXB) est une enzyme qui, chez l'homme, est codée par le gène HEXB. Elle est cartographiée sur 5q13.3. HEXB est la sous-unité bêta de l'enzyme lysosomale bêta-hexosaminidase qui, avec la protéine activatrice GM2 cofacteur, catalyse la dégradation du ganglioside GM2 et d'autres molécules contenant des N-acétyl hexosamines terminales. Les mutations du gène de la sous-unité bêta entraînent la maladie de Sandhoff (gangliosidose à GM2 de type II). Il a été constaté que HEXB est une hydrolase de peptidoglycane et qu'elle est impliquée dans la restriction de la croissance des mycobactéries avant même le début de l'immunité adaptative.
