Ce gène code l'un des facteurs d'initiation de la traduction, qui a pour fonction de stimuler l'initiation de la synthèse protéique au niveau de l'utilisation de l'ARNm. Ce gène est délété dans le syndrome de Williams, un trouble du développement multisystémique causé par la délétion de gènes contigus au 7q11.23. L'épissage alternatif de ce gène génère 2 variants de transcrits.
