Ce gène code une protéine bifonctionnelle qui catalyse les deux dernières étapes de la voie de biosynthèse de novo des purines. Le domaine N-terminal a une activité phosphoribosylaminoimidazolecarboxamide formyltransférase, et le domaine C-terminal a une activité IMP cyclohydrolase. Une mutation dans ce gène entraîne une AICA-ribosidurie.
