BECN1 (beclin 1; Beclin-1/ATG6) is a core autophagy regulator and class III PI3K-complex component linking PI3P production to autophagosome initiation and membrane trafficking.
Biological function: Beclin-1 acts as a core subunit of class III phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase complexes that generate PI3P. Distinct BECN1-containing complexes support autophagosome initiation, autophagosome maturation and endocytic trafficking, making BECN1 central to macroautophagy and membrane-remodelling pathways.
