Interleukin (IL)-18, auch Interferon-gamma-induzierender Faktor (IGIF) genannt, erhöht die Aktivität natürlicher Killerzellen (NK-Zellen) in Milzzellen. Das Gen kodiert für ein Vorläuferprotein von 192 Aminosäuren und ein reifes Protein von 157 Aminosäuren.1 IL-18 ist ein kürzlich entdecktes Zytokin, das sowohl T-Helfer-Typ-1 (Th1)- als auch Th2-Antworten moduliert.2 IL-18 ist ein potentes proinflammatorisches Zytokin mit potenziell atherogenen Eigenschaften. Es wird in atherosklerotischen Plaques im Vergleich zu normalen Kontrollarterien stark exprimiert und ist hauptsächlich in Plaque-Makrophagen lokalisiert.3
