Es ist ein sezerniertes Protein mit zwei Cystein-reichen Regionen und ist an der embryonalen Entwicklung beteiligt, indem es den WNT-Signalweg hemmt. Erhöhte DKK1-Spiegel im Knochenmark, Plasma und peripheren Blut sind mit dem Vorhandensein von osteolytischen Knochenläsionen bei Patienten mit multiplem Myelom assoziiert.
