Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) ist ein potenter Stimulator der Knochenresorption, dessen Gen auf 2q14 kartiert ist und der an der Pathogenese von hohem Knochenumsatz und Osteoporose beteiligt ist. IL-1β, ein prominentes, von Mikroglia stammendes Zytokin, verursachte den Tod von Oligodendrozyten in Kokultur mit Astrozyten und Mikroglia, jedoch nicht in Reinkultur von Oligodendrozyten allein. Es kann auch den nukleären Export eines spezifischen NCOR-Korepressorkomplexes verursachen, was zur Derepression einer spezifischen Untergruppe von durch nukleären Faktor-kappa-B (NFKB) regulierten Genen führt. Des Weiteren sind mikroenvironmentales IL-1β und, in geringerem Maße, IL-1α für die In-vivo-Angiogenese und Invasivität verschiedener Tumorzellen erforderlich. Zusätzlich induziert die Kooperation von IL-1β und PDGFB eine kontraktil-zu-synthetische Phänotypmodifikation menschlicher aortaler glatter Muskelzellen in Kultur. Darüber hinaus kann der Zusammenhang mit Krankheiten durch die biologischen Eigenschaften von IL-1β erklärt werden, welches ein wichtiges proinflammatorisches Zytokin und ein starker Inhibitor der Magensäuresekretion ist.
