Die Gewebeinhibitoren der Metalloproteinasen (TIMPs) sind natürliche Inhibitoren der Matrix-Metalloproteinasen, einer Gruppe von zinkbindenden Endopeptidasen, die am Abbau der extrazellulären Matrix beteiligt sind. Das TIMP3-Gen wird in vielen Geweben exprimiert, mit der höchsten Expression in der Plazenta. TIMP3 kodiert einen potenten Angiogenese-Inhibitor und ist bei der Sorsby-Fundusdystrophie mutiert, einer makulären degenerativen Erkrankung mit submakulärer choroidaler Neovaskularisation. Das TIMP3-Gen ist auf 22q12.1-q13.2 kartiert. Mutationen in TIMP3 verursachen die autosomal-dominante Erkrankung Sorsby-Fundusdystrophie (SFD).
