Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) ist ein entzündungsförderndes Zytokin, das an der Entwicklung von Fibrose in entzündeten Geweben beteiligt ist. Die Produktion von IFN-gamma, die genetisch kontrolliert wird, kann die Entwicklung von Fibrose in Lungenallotransplantaten beeinflussen. IFN-gamma wird auch von natürlichen Killerzellen (NK-Zellen) und am stärksten von CD8-zytotoxischen T-Zellen produziert und ist entscheidend für die Kontrolle mikrobieller Krankheitserreger. Interferon-gamma wird als entscheidend für die Wirtsabwehr gegen viele Infektionen angesehen. Genetisch bedingte Variabilität bei IFN-gamma und dessen Expression könnte für die Entwicklung von Tuberkulose wichtig sein. IFN-gamma aktiviert den oxidativen Stoffwechsel und die antimikrobielle Aktivität menschlicher Makrophagen. Neben seiner antiviralen Aktivität hat IFN-gamma wichtige immunregulatorische Funktionen. IFN-gamma spielt eine wichtige Rolle bei der Kontrolle der Neointima-Proliferation.
