ADAMTS4, ein Disintegrin und Metalloprotease mit Thrombospondin-Motiven 4, ist ein Enzym, das beim Menschen durch das ADAMTS4-Gen kodiert wird. ADAMTS4 ist ein Mitglied der großen ADAMTS-Familie von Zink-abhängigen Proteasen. Das menschliche ADAMTS4-Gen wurde durch somatische Zellhybridanalyse auf Chromosom 1 kartiert. Das von diesem Gen kodierte Enzym besitzt kein C-terminales TS-Motiv. Es ist verantwortlich für den Abbau von Aggrecan, einem wichtigen Proteoglykan des Knorpels, und Brevican, einem gehirnspezifischen extrazellulären Matrixprotein. Die Spaltung von Aggrecan und Brevican deutet auf Schlüsselrollen dieses Enzyms bei arthritischen Erkrankungen und im zentralen Nervensystem, möglicherweise bei der Progression von Gliomen, hin.
