Interleukin-6 (IL-6) ist ein Protein, das beim Menschen vom IL6-Gen kodiert wird. IL-6 ist ein Interleukin, das sowohl als proinflammatorisches als auch als antiinflammatorisches Zytokin wirkt. Es wird von T-Zellen und Makrophagen sezerniert, um die Immunantwort auf Traumata, insbesondere Verbrennungen oder andere Gewebeschäden, die zu Entzündungen führen, zu stimulieren. IL-6 ist einer der wichtigsten Mediatoren von Fieber und der Akute-Phase-Reaktion. IL-6 ist auch essentiell für das Hybridomwachstum und ist in vielen ergänzenden Klonierungsmedien wie Briclone enthalten. Durch In-situ-Hybridisierung und Southern-Blot-Analyse von Maus-Mensch-Hybridzelllinien wird das IL6-Gen auf Chromosom 7p15 kartiert.

Biological function: IL6 is a pleiotropic cytokine involved in immunity, tissue regeneration and metabolism. It binds IL6R and recruits the signalling subunit IL6ST/gp130 to activate IL6 pathways.
