Dieses Gen kodiert ein Protein, das zur Familie der Carboanhydrasen von Zink-Metalloenzymen gehört, welche die reversible Hydratation von Kohlendioxid in verschiedenen biologischen Prozessen katalysieren. Das durch dieses Gen kodierte Protein ist ein akatalytisches Mitglied der Alpha-Carboanhydrase-Untergruppe und es wird angenommen, dass es eine Rolle im zentralen Nervensystem spielt, insbesondere bei der Gehirnentwicklung.
