Das durch dieses Gen kodierte Protein ist eine putative Serin/Threonin-Kinase, die sich an den Mitoseapparat lokalisiert und in der frühen Mitose mit dem Zellzykluskontroller CDC2-Kinase komplexiert. Das Protein wird zellzyklusabhängig phosphoryliert, wobei die Phosphorylierung in der späten Prophase bis zur Metaphase erhalten bleibt. Die N-terminale Region des Proteins bindet an CDC2, um einen Komplex zu bilden, der eine reduzierte H1-Histon-Kinase-Aktivität aufweist, was auf eine Rolle als negativer Regulator von CDC2/Cyclin A hindeutet. Darüber hinaus bindet die C-terminale Kinasedomäne an ihre eigene N-terminale Region, was auf eine potenzielle negative Regulation durch Interferenz mit der Komplexbildung über intramolekulare Bindung hindeutet. Biochemische und genetische Daten legen eine Rolle als Tumorsuppressor nahe.
