Die Zona pellucida ist eine extrazelluläre Matrix, die die Eizelle und den frühen Embryo umgibt. Sie besteht hauptsächlich aus drei oder vier Glykoproteinen mit verschiedenen Funktionen während der Befruchtung und der Präimplantationsentwicklung. Das naszierende Protein enthält eine N-terminale Signalsequenz, eine konservierte ZP-Domäne, eine Furin-Spaltstelle und eine C-terminale Transmembrandomäne. Es wird vermutet, dass die Furin-Spaltung zur Freisetzung des reifen Proteins aus der Plasmamembran für den anschließenden Einbau in die Zona pellucida-Matrix führt. Die Notwendigkeit der Furin-Spaltung in diesem Prozess bleibt jedoch nach Mausstudien umstritten. Früher wurde dieses Gen als ZP1 oder ZPB bezeichnet und es wurde angenommen, dass es ähnliche Funktionen wie Maus Zp1 hat. Ein menschliches Gen mit höherer Ähnlichkeit und chromosomalen Syntenie zu Maus Zp1 wurde jedoch dem Symbol ZP1 zugeordnet, und dieses Gen wurde
