Dieses Gen kodiert ein Mitglied der Beta/Gamma-Crystallin-Proteinfamilie. Crystallins bilden die Hauptproteine der Wirbeltier-Augenlinse und erhalten die Transparenz und den Brechungsindex der Linse. Dieses Gen und mehrere Familienmitglieder befinden sich in einem Gen-Cluster auf Chromosom 2. Mutationen in diesem Gen wurden als Ursache für verschiedene Arten von Katarakten nachgewiesen, darunter der Coppock-ähnliche Katarakt und der zonuläre pulverförmige Katarakt.
