Dieses Gen kodiert ein Mitglied der heterogenen Familie basischer, prolinreicher, menschlicher Speichelglykoproteine. Das kodierte Präproprotein durchläuft eine proteolytische Verarbeitung, um eine oder mehrere reife Isoformen zu erzeugen, bevor es aus den Ohrspeicheldrüsen sezerniert wird. Es wurden mehrere Allele dieses Gens identifiziert, die Variationen in der Länge der Tandem-Repeats, polymorphen Spaltstellen und polymorphen Stop-Codons aufweisen.
