Die gepaarten Immunglobulin-ähnlichen Typ-2-Rezeptoren bestehen aus stark verwandten aktivierenden und hemmenden Rezeptoren, die an der Regulierung vieler Aspekte des Immunsystems beteiligt sind. Die Gene für die gepaarten Immunglobulin-ähnlichen Rezeptoren sind in einer Tandem-Kopf-Schwanz-Orientierung auf Chromosom 7 lokalisiert. Dieses Gen kodiert das aktivierende Mitglied des Rezeptorpaares und enthält einen im Vergleich zu seinem hemmenden Gegenstück (PILRA) verkürzten zytoplasmatischen Schwanz, der einen langen zytoplasmatischen Schwanz mit immunorezeptor-tyrosinbasierten Hemm-Motiven (ITIM) aufweist. Es wird angenommen, dass dieses Gen aus einer Duplikation des hemmenden PILRA-Gens entstanden ist und sich entwickelt hat, um seine aktivierende Funktion zu erlangen.
