Trefoil-Faktoren (TFF) sind Sekretionsprodukte von Mucin-produzierenden Zellen. Sie spielen eine Schlüsselrolle bei der Aufrechterhaltung der Oberflächenintegrität der Mundschleimhaut und fördern die Heilung der Magen-Darm-Schleimhaut durch einen Prozess, der als Restitution bezeichnet wird. TFF umfasst die Magenpeptide (TFF1), das spasmolytische Peptid (TFF2) und den intestinalen Trefoil-Faktor (TFF3). Sie spielen eine wichtige und notwendige Rolle bei der Epithelrestauration im Magen-Darm-Trakt. Mitglieder der Trefoil-Familie zeichnen sich dadurch aus, dass sie mindestens eine Kopie des Trefoil-Motivs besitzen, einer 40-Aminosäuren-Domäne, die drei konservierte Disulfidbrücken enthält. Es handelt sich um stabile sekretorische Proteine, die in der Magen-Darm-Schleimhaut exprimiert werden. Trefoil-Faktor 3 (TFF3) ist an der Aufrechterhaltung und Reparatur der Darmschleimhaut beteiligt. TFF3 fördert die Beweglichkeit von Epithelzellen bei Heilungsprozessen (Motogen).
