N-Cadherin (NCAD) gehört zur Familie der Cadherin-Zell-Zell-Adhäsionsrezeptoren, zu der P-, E- und R-Cadherin sowie das Leberzell-Adhäsionsmolekül (L-CAM) gehören. N-Cadherin, auch bekannt als Cadherin-2, kodiert ein 907 Aminosäuren langes Protein, das eine 159 Aminosäuren lange Signalsequenz enthält. Die Nukleotidsequenzen von Mensch und Maus sind zu 96 % identisch. Das Maus-Ncad-Gen besteht aus 16 Exons, die über mehr als 200 kb genomischer DNA verteilt sind. Das menschliche N-Cadherin-Gen enthält 16 Exons und seine Sequenz ist sowohl dem Maus-NCAD-Gen (einschließlich der großen ersten und zweiten Introns) als auch anderen Cadherin-Genen sehr ähnlich. N-Cadherin ist auf 18q11.2 kartiert. Cadherin reguliert die Morphogenese der dendritischen Dornen.
