Periaxin ist ein Protein, das beim Menschen vom PRX-Gen kodiert wird. Dieses Gen kodiert ein Protein, das an der Aufrechterhaltung des peripheren Nervenmyelins beteiligt ist. Das kodierte Protein enthält 2 PDZ-Domänen, die nach PSD95 (postsynaptisches Dichteprotein), DlgA (Drosophila disc large Tumorsuppressor) und ZO1 (ein Säugetierprotein der Tight Junction) benannt wurden. Für dieses Gen wurden zwei alternativ gespleißte Transkriptvarianten beschrieben, die verschiedene Proteinisoformen kodieren und in der Schwann-Zelle unterschiedlich zielgerichtet sind. Mutationen in diesem Gen verursachen die Charcot-Marie-Tooth-Neuropathie Typ 4F und die Dejerine-Sottas-Neuropathie.
