Transthyretin (TTR) ist auch als Präalbumin bekannt. Es ist der Chromosomenregion 18q11.2-q12.1 zugeordnet. Dieses Gen kodiert für ein Trägerprotein, das für den Transport von Schilddrüsenhormonen und Retinol verantwortlich ist. Das Protein besteht aus einem Tetramer identischer Untereinheiten. Aufgrund der erhöhten Stabilität der Tetramerform dieses kodierten Proteins bei Mäusen im Vergleich zum menschlichen Protein hat dieses Genprodukt eine geringere Tendenz, Amyloidfibrillen zu bilden. Beim Menschen bindet dieses Protein Beta-Amyloid, verhindert dessen Aggregation und spielt eine neuroprotektive Rolle bei der Alzheimer-Krankheit.
