Es wurde festgestellt, dass Leptin fettleibig und diabetisch ist und eine reduzierte Aktivität, einen verminderten Stoffwechsel und eine niedrigere Körpertemperatur aufweist. cDNA-Klone, die Leptin kodieren, wurden aus menschlichen, affenartigen, Maus- und Rattenzellen isoliert. Die Expression von Leptin-mRNA wurde auf das Fettgewebe beschränkt. Obwohl die Regulation der Fettspeicher als die Hauptfunktion von Leptin angesehen wird, spielt es auch eine Rolle in anderen physiologischen Prozessen, wie die zahlreichen Syntheseorte außerhalb der Fettzellen und die vielen Zelltypen neben den hypothalamischen Zellen, die Leptinrezeptoren aufweisen, belegen. Viele dieser zusätzlichen Funktionen müssen noch definiert werden.
