CYCS ist auch bekannt als CYC, HCS oder THC4. Dieses Gen kodiert ein kleines Hämprotein, das als zentrale Komponente der Elektronentransportkette in Mitochondrien fungiert. Das kodierte Protein ist mit der inneren Mitochondrienmembran assoziiert, wo es Elektronen von Cytochrom b aufnimmt und an den Cytochromoxidase-Komplex weiterleitet. Dieses Protein ist auch an der Initiierung der Apoptose beteiligt. Mutationen in diesem Gen sind mit der autosomal-dominanten nicht-syndromalen Thrombozytopenie assoziiert. Zahlreiche prozessierte Pseudogene dieses Gens finden sich im gesamten menschlichen Genom.
