AKR1B1 encodes aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B; its reviewed human protein is aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B1, widely known as aldose reductase (AR/ALR2).
Biological function: AKR1B1 is an NADPH-dependent oxidoreductase that reduces diverse carbonyl-containing compounds. It catalyses glucose reduction to sorbitol, the first step of the polyol pathway, and also reduces endogenous, lipid-derived and xenobiotic carbonyls.
