APCS (amyloid P component, serum; serum amyloid P-component or SAP) is a secreted pentraxin-family glycoprotein. It is a calcium-dependent ligand-binding protein found in serum and is characteristically associated with amyloid deposits.
Biological function: Serum amyloid P-component forms a pentamer and binds calcium. Reviewed UniProt evidence supports interactions with DNA and histones, a potential role in scavenging nuclear material released from damaged cells, and calcium-dependent lectin activity; NCBI also describes binding to amyloid cross-beta structures and apoptotic cells.
