APOC3 (apolipoprotein C3) encodes apolipoprotein C-III (ApoC-III), a component of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins including VLDL and chylomicrons and also of HDL. APOC3 is a key regulator of triglyceride homeostasis through effects on lipoprotein production, lipolysis and remnant clearance.
Biological function: Apolipoprotein C-III regulates triglyceride-rich lipoprotein metabolism at several steps. NCBI and reviewed UniProt describe APOC3 as promoting hepatic VLDL1 assembly and secretion, inhibiting lipoprotein lipase-mediated triglyceride hydrolysis, and delaying hepatic clearance of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein remnants.
