Studien haben bestätigt, dass Eisen das am häufigsten vorkommende Übergangsmetallelement in lebenden Organismen ist und an einer Vielzahl physiologischer Aktivitäten beteiligt ist. In den letzten Jahren hat freies Eisen in Zellen aufgrund seiner hohen Reaktivität und seiner Korrelation mit Zellschädigung und Zelltod mehr Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen. Freies Eisen existiert in der Zelle als stabiles Fe2+ und Fe3+. Angesichts des reduzierenden Milieus, des Metalltransporters und der Wasserlöslichkeit von Fe2+ ist das Verhalten von Fe2+ wichtiger als das von Fe3+.
Dieses Kit bietet eine fluoreszierende Sonde, die spezifisch an Fe2+ binden kann, und die Sonde kann gut in das Zellinnere eindringen, was sich für den Nachweis von Fe2+ in lebenden Zellen eignet. Wenn die Sonde mit Fe2+ reagiert, wird ein irreversibles orangefarbenes (rotes) fluoreszierendes Produkt erzeugt (Anregungswellenlänge: 542 nm, Emissionswellenlänge: 575 nm).
