BDNF

brain derived neurotrophic factor

Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a nerve growth factor-family signalling protein produced from a precursor form, proBDNF. Mature BDNF is a major neurotrophin studied for its roles in neuronal survival, differentiation and synaptic plasticity.

About BDNF

Target information is kept separate from product-level validation so you can review the biology and the reagent evidence independently.

Biology

Biological function

BDNF activates signalling through the neurotrophin receptor NTRK2 (TrkB). It supports survival and differentiation of selected neuronal populations, contributes to axonal growth and pathfinding, regulates dendritic growth and morphology, and is a major modulator of synaptic transmission and plasticity.

Experimental context

Research context

BDNF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor and proBDNF are widely studied in neurodevelopment, neuronal survival, NTRK2/TrkB signalling, axonal and dendritic biology, and synaptic plasticity including long-term potentiation and depression. Distinguish precursor and mature BDNF when interpreting reagent specificity and experimental results.
