BMI1 is a Polycomb-group protein that forms part of PRC1-family chromatin-repressive complexes. It contributes to maintenance of transcriptional silencing through chromatin regulation, including promotion of histone H2A monoubiquitination, and is primarily associated with the nucleus, although cytoplasmic pools have also been reported.
