ABCA4 is a retina-specific ATP-binding cassette transporter located in photoreceptor outer-segment disc membranes. It uses ATP to transport retinal-phosphatidylethanolamine conjugates across the disc membrane, helping clear retinaldehyde-derived compounds generated during the visual cycle and limiting accumulation of potentially toxic bisretinoids.
