ABCG8 is an ATP-binding cassette half-transporter that forms an obligate heterodimer with ABCG5 to regulate sterol homeostasis. The ABCG5/ABCG8 complex is expressed prominently in the liver and intestine and localises to the apical plasma membrane, where it promotes biliary cholesterol secretion and limits intestinal absorption of non-cholesterol sterols.
