ABCE1 is a conserved ATPase that acts in the cytosolic translation machinery rather than as a membrane transporter. It binds post-termination ribosomes and uses ATP-dependent conformational changes to promote ribosomal subunit recycling; it has also been characterised as an inhibitor of RNase L.
