HBEGF is produced as a membrane-anchored precursor that can be proteolytically released as soluble heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor. The membrane-bound and soluble forms participate in cell-cell and paracrine signalling, including activation of EGFR-family receptors, and are involved in processes such as cell proliferation, migration, tissue repair and wound healing.
