Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a secreted member of the TGF-β superfamily that acts as a stress-responsive cytokine. Its expression can increase after cellular injury, inflammation, hypoxia and oxidative stress, and the mature protein functions in the extracellular environment after proteolytic processing of its precursor.
