HEXA encodes the alpha subunit of beta-hexosaminidase A, a lysosomal glycosidase complex involved in degradation of GM2 ganglioside and other glycoconjugates. The mature enzyme functions within lysosomes, where the alpha subunit pairs with HEXB to form hexosaminidase A and contributes the substrate specificity required for GM2 catabolism.
