GAD2, commonly known as GAD65, is a glutamate decarboxylase that converts glutamate to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. GAD65 is enriched in GABAergic neurons and is associated mainly with presynaptic nerve terminals and synaptic vesicle membranes, where it supports activity-dependent GABA synthesis. It is also an important autoantigen in type 1 diabetes.
