Carbonic anhydrase 2 (CA2; carbonic anhydrase II/CA-II, also CAC) is a highly active cytosolic zinc metalloenzyme that reversibly hydrates carbon dioxide. Researchers study CA2 in bicarbonate handling, intracellular pH control, renal physiology, bone biology and carbonic-anhydrase enzymology.
Biological function: CA2 catalyses the reversible interconversion of carbon dioxide and water with bicarbonate and protons. Its high catalytic efficiency supports rapid CO2/bicarbonate equilibration and acid-base homeostasis, and CA2 can participate in membrane-associated bicarbonate-transport complexes despite being primarily cytosolic.
