AHR is the aryl hydrocarbon receptor, also known as AhR or Ah receptor. This ligand-activated transcription factor senses diverse environmental, dietary, microbial and endogenous compounds and converts ligand binding into regulated gene-expression programmes.
Biological function: AHR is a ligand-activated basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor. After ligand binding it translocates to the nucleus, heterodimerizes with ARNT and binds xenobiotic-response elements to regulate target genes, including xenobiotic-metabolising enzymes such as CYP1A1. AHR signalling also contributes to broader developmental, metabolic and immune regulatory programmes.
