DIABLO, also known as SMAC, is a mitochondrial pro-apoptotic protein that promotes caspase activation by binding inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs). During apoptosis, DIABLO is released from mitochondria into the cytosol, where it helps relieve IAP-mediated suppression of caspases.
