Vimentin is a type III intermediate filament protein that forms part of the cytoskeleton, particularly in mesenchymal and other non-epithelial cells. It contributes to cell shape, mechanical integrity, migration and organisation of intracellular structures, with filaments extending through the cytoplasm and associating with organelles including the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria.
